Transponders

As of Jan 2023, Tipperary Raceway requires all drivers of all classes*1 to have a functioning transponder.

Tipperary Raceway is a short track, where sub 16-second laps are regularly achieved. With 20+ cars on track, we cannot accurately count these cars unless we use a computerised system comprising the MYLAPS X2 system in the tower. This system and a transponder in each car assure accuracy to the nearest 1000th of a second.
Historically, If a car doesn’t have a transponder we have manually positioned them, This can add several minutes and potential for inaccuracy, delays, disappointment, and frustrations. This is no it longer happening for the purposes of scoring. IE the electronic system rules over all. Except in the most extreme circumstances.

The ORCi classes and National Hot Rods rules also specifically require transponders. This requirement can be found in their rules.

Transponders can be purchased at MurrayMotorSports.com.

Please see below for installation advice, and information specific to Tipperary Raceway

  • Kart (Yellow) or Car (red) MYLAPS transponders are usable. MX (Orange) will NOT work.
  • Previous generations of MYLAPS laps transponders (Car and Kart) will still work. As will AMB. If your transponder has worked before, it will still work.
  • Standard installation should be 1.8 Meters back from the frontmost part of the car.
  • A 6″ (150mm) Hole in the floor with the bottom of the transponder down in the hole.
  • The writing on the transponder should be facing the driver’s seat.
  • We would strongly advise all changes to transponders such as installation, move, swap, trade, or borrowing, the timing tower should be informed before practice commences. We will advise you at the time if we require you to cross the line.
  • If you do not have a transponder, you can race with permission but will be gridded at the back all day.*2
  • Tipperary Raceway is NOT responsible for a weak, missing, or otherwise faulty transponder signal. This is drivers equipment, and therefore the responsibility of the driver.
  • While Tipperary Raceway will endeavour to inform drivers during practice by race radio if there is an issue, it is the driver’s responsibility to ensure the function of all of their equipment before entering the track.
  • In the event of a dispute with the transponder result, the Chief Steward of the meeting will make the final decision.
  • Any driver found to have fitted the transponder further forward than the required 1.8 metres may be excluded from the meeting, and have points removed for the day.
  • Advise on a particular installation can be sought at the tower BEFORE Practice.

Notes; As of the writing of these rules this information is correct. Changes can occur without warning.

*1 Currently bangers of all classes are exempt from the requirement to have a transponder.
*2 Tipperary Raceway reserves the right to exclude cars without a transponder from racing without warning.
